JOINT-BOSS Michael Brothers admitted Saturday's 3-0 victory against Ely City was just what the doctor ordered after back-to-back defeats for his Brantham Athletic side.

The Imps bowed out of the FA Cup after Eastbourne Borough before slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Long Melford, last Wednesday.

However, they got back on track as second-half goals from Sam Newson, Mason Ridgway Lumley and substitute Elliott Johnson saw them to a comfortable Thurlow Nunn League victory at the Leisure Centre.

"It was massively needed, after the disappointment of going out of the FA Cup and then losing at Melford," said Brothers, who runs the side with Matt Carmichael.

"We made quite a few changes to try and freshen things up and it was good to make use of the squad at our disposal.

"Our performance was very good and hopefully it'll kick-start another run.

"This league is going to be more open than people thought and if we make the most of our games in hand, we could really shoot up the table."

Brantham were without Brothers himself (calf) and fellow striker George Clarke (knee) - as they will be for Saturday's home match against Haverhill Rovers.

However, Brothers, who watched on from the dugout instead, was pleased with the way his side adapted.

"George and myself are quite similar players in that we're both big and physical," he said.

"Those that came into the side play slightly differently but just as effectively and it was good to show that we can play different ways and adjust to scenarios in front of us."
