SOUTHEND United boss Chris Powell has been impressed by Joey Barton’s start in management with Fleetwood Town but feels his biggest test is yet to come.

Barton was a controversial and high profile figure throughout his playing career, which saw him line-up for Manchester City, QPR and Burnley.

But he has now moved into management with Fleetwood and has suffered one defeat in eight League One matches so far this season.

However, Powell feels Barton’s biggest test will be when his team have a bad spell.

“Joey’s done OK but the true test is when things don’t go your way and how you react as a manager and a person, how you man manage the group and how you pick them up and yourself up too,” said Powell.

“He hasn’t gone through too much of that but he has good people around him.

“I know Steve Eyre really well and he’s a terrific coach.

“But regardless of who you are and what level you’re at you want a solid start and you want to learn quickly how to deal with players, staff and stakeholders which nothing prepares you for.

“He’s had that and I’m sure he’s very happy.

“He will want to build on that in the medium and long-term future.

“You want to make an impact but so do I.”

Fleetwood are currently eighth in the table with 13 points from eight games.

And Powell knows they will provide a tough test.

“They lost their first game but they’ve picked up some draws and had some good wins,” said the Shrimpers boss.

“The one at Scunthorpe sticks out and Fleetwood will be tough opposition but I’m only focusing on us and the players will be ready.”

However, the Shrimpers will still be missing midfielder Luke Hyam, who is struggling with an ankle problem.

“It’s slow with Luke,” said Powell.

“He’s joined in with light training but it’s day by day really.”

But Powell did reveal long term absentee Rob Kiernan could be edging closer to a return.

“Rob Kiernan has a consultation and if he gets positive news hopefully we will see him out on the grass,” he added.
