CLACTON Cricket Club skipper Imran Sheikh believes his talented squad will only improve - and can challenge for promotion next season.

The all-rounder is coming to the end of his first season as captain, with the Seasiders set to finish their Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship campaign at home to Copford on Saturday (12.30pm).

They are sixth in the table after winning by 24 runs in last week's penultimate fixture at home to high-flying Lakenheath.

Sheikh says it has been a "pleasure" stepping up to lead the side and is anticipating more progress being made in 2019.

"The team have really stuck together and if we win our final game this weekend we could potentially move up to fourth in the table," he told the Gazette.

"We've won two close games in recent weeks thanks to very good contributions from the likes of Bradley Pitts, Lewis Kirk and Harlan Grieg.

"And there have been some great performances throughout the season, both as a team and as individuals.

"Bradley, Harlan and Kieran Parkes, in particular, have all had very good years and I hope they finish strongly and build on that for next season.

"This team can only improve and if we could add a player or two then we could push for promotion next year."

Sheikh had special praise for Greig, who has made a major contribution with both bat and ball during his first season at Vista Road.

The South African has been an outstanding overseas player and Sheikh said: "He's someone you can always rely on.

"Throughout the season, he's done well for us with bat and bowl, making 700-odd runs and taking 46 wickets.

"He's always working hard on his game and he's fitted in so well at the club.

"Harlan's had a great season and I hope we can get him back next year."

Sheikh thanked three loyal club men for their support during his first year as captain.

"It's been a pleasure to skipper the side this year," he said.

"But Gary Kirk, James Lee and Paul Lee have supported me no end, making my job a lot easier.

"These guys do all the hard work so we can continue playing for this great club."

Last week's victory came after the Seasiders batted first and made 155.

Daniel Smith top-scored with 54 and Mo Asghar made 34.

In reply, Lakenheath were all out for 131.

Sheikh returned the top bowling figures of three wickets for seven runs, in three overs.

There were also three wickets for Halim Hossain Biplop and two for Jack Eastman.
