Colchester United head coach John McGreal was delighted with his side's performance at both ends of the pitch after they claimed a comprehensive 3-0 win over Cambridge United this afternoon.

First-half goals from Sammie Szmodics and Frank Nouble gave the U's a two-goal advantage at the break, before substitute Courtney Senior sealed their victory with ten minutes remaining.

Colchester are now fourth in the League Two table after taking 15 points from their opening eight games, their best return at the start of a league season since 2004.

McGreal said: “I’m delighted with the performance and some of our individual play.

“When you’re on a bit of a run, you do get a bit of the rub of the green which we got at times today.

“But we played some fantastic football as well and we look a threat going forward.

“I’m thrilled to bits for the defence as well as scoring the goals.

“At times, we were under a little bit of pressure and they had good opportunities to score.

“You could say it’s either bad misses or good defending but he’s working ever so hard.

“I was really delighted for big Frank (Nouble) to get his goal and his work-rate has been fantastic for us – the fans are really appreciative as well.

“I thought we were very fortunate to go in 2-0 up at half-time.

“Dillon’s made a great save and we cleared one off the line and I always thought they were in the game.

“Going in 2-0 up at half-time, I’m a big believer in that it’s a fantastic scoreline and the next goal is important and thankfully, we got it.

“When we got in and around it, we were clinical with our finishing.

“And on the other side of it, Brennan Dickenson cleared two off the line, the keeper’s made a good save and we’ve put bodies on the line."
