DIAZ Wright has set his sights on keeping his place in John McGreal’s side after making his first-ever league start for Colchester United.

The 20-year-old midfielder featured in the U’s starting line-up for the first time in their 1-1 draw at Tranmere Rovers, last weekend.

Wright was given his opportunity at Prenton Park, following Tom Lapslie’s knee injury and Brandon Comley being away on international duty.

Now the U’s academy product says he is hungry for more opportunities in League Two.

Wright told the Daily Gazette: “Now the first one is done, I just want more and more.

“We’re at home to Cambridge this weekend and hopefully I can start again but I just have to crack on now.

“Joe Dunne will be coming back and it’ll be good to see him – I’m sure he’ll get a good reception.”

Wright has been named in Colchester’s line-up for each of their last two matches, having also started their Checkatrade Trophy defeat to Southampton under-21s, last week.

“It was a disappointing game (against Southampton under-21s) last Tuesday but I just wanted to put it right against Tranmere,” said Wright, who is the younger brother of former U’s winger, Drey Wright.

“I had a few nerves leading into the game, knowing that I was starting.

“But once I was on the pitch, I felt alright.”

Wright helped Colchester come from behind to claim a draw at Tranmere, after Harry Pell’s second-half strike cancelled out James Norwood’s first-half opener for the hosts.

It extended the U’s unbeaten away league run to four matches and the young midfielder felt their point was fully merited.

Wright added: “It was a good, deserved point against a decent Tranmere team.

“Coming in at half-time behind, you’re just hoping to get a decent result in the second half and we managed to do that.

“We showed more intent to get the ball in the second half and luckily, the spaces opened up higher up the pitch for our attacking players to get at their back four and I thought we played really well in the second half, where I think we dominated the game on the ball.

“They had one or two counter-attacks but we deserved a point, at least.”
