Colchester United head coach John McGreal admitted some of his players let themselves down following a disappointing display in their Checkatrade Trophy Group B opener.

McGreal gave some of his squad players a chance to shine in the contest at the JobServe Community Stadium but it ended in a frustrating 2-0 defeat against Southampton under-21s, following goals from Marcus Barnes and Michael Obafemi for Saints.

McGreal said: "It was very disappointing and a poor approach from our players tonight.

"I said we had to look at who we've got next coming in but I think you'd be able to tell me who's coming in next, because I can't see it at the minute.

"We've had a fantastic start to the season and the team we've put out tonight, there was nothing there to be seen and that's the disappointing thing.

"The players were given all the details on the opposition as we always do but taking out the experienced boys, it was a little bit like we saw towards the end of last season.

"There were a lot of young boys out there running but without a purpose at times and it's disappointing, because they've given me an opportunity.

"I can't honestly say that anyone has come out of that with any credit tonight.

"We were poor in both boxes and some of the boys have let themselves down but I'm sure back in training they will be back on it.

"You have to be honest and I've let the boys know how I feel."

McGreal added that Sammie Szmodics was withdrawn at half-time in the U's defeat as a 'precaution', ahead of their game at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, in League Two.
