Colchester United manager Geraint Williams has dismissed transfer rumours surrounding George Elokobi.

The promising young defender was linked with Scottish giants Celtic in a national newspaper.

But U's boss Williams said: "It's just pure speculation."

The popular Cameroon-born full-back has been a first-team regular this season.

Reports claimed that the Scottish Premier League champions, along with the U's Coca-Cola Championship rivals Southampton, are keen on the 21-year-old former Dulwich Hamlet player.

Elokobi said: "It's nice to get the recognition because it means the whole team is doing well but it will not affect my football and I will keep working hard."

Elokobi has caught the eye this season with his powerful attacking runs from deep in his own half, three of which have resulted in goals for Teddy Sheringham and Kevin Lisbie.

It is an aspect of his game he gave particular attention to during pre-season and he is glad that it is paying dividends.

"It's something I've been working on a lot over the summer," said Elokobi.

"Watching football on television has really helped.

"I really admire players like David Beckham and David Bentley and the accuracy of their crossing is excellent.

"It's no good getting forward and then wasting opportunities.

"I have to make sure that there is a good delivery at the end of it.

"It's a team game and I don't mind who benefits from my crosses, as long as someone does."
