STOKE by Nayland Golf Club's juniors finished as runners-up at the Faldo Wedge county competition.

Junior club captain Max Toombs, along with Harry English and Sam Nixon, finished second at the event for under-18 year olds, played at Canons Brook GC on the outskirts of Harlow.

Stoke by Nayland finished four shots behind winners Thorpe Hall GC, who retained their title.

The competition sees the total of the three scores count, so there is no room for a bad round.

Sam and Harry both scored 39 points and Max had 33, to give Stoke a total score of 111.

Each month during the summer, a friendly mixed game of golf is arranged for one Friday night by Sue Gregory and her husband Stuart.

In the Friday night mixed competition, pairs are drawn out of a hat and then a greensomes competition takes place over nine holes.

This month, the competition was played on the front nine of the Constable Course.

It was won by Peter Garnet playing with the ladies captain, Elaine Davidson who scored 21 points.

They beat playing partners Steve Clark and Janet Hodge into second place by a single point.

Stoke by Nayland GC played their first match of four Curry Cup league games against Seckford Hall GC, near Woodbridge.

The 36-hole competition sees pairs playing foursomes in the morning and then singles in the afternoon.

The design of the competition is to provide up-and-coming players a chance to play the same format as the county competitions and is contested by clubs from north Essex and south Suffolk.

Playing at home, the Stoke by Nayland GC team enjoyed a convincing 16-2 win.

Stoke by Nayland GC's Thornton Cup team - the best players in the club - played their second-round plate competition match against The Burstead.

With five players playing at home and five away, neither side gets home advantage.

Stoke by Nayland won 6-4 to progress to the quarter-finals where they will take on Toot Hill, on July 8.
