Colchester United’s youngsters bowed out of this season’s Premier League Cup with a defeat after losing 3-0 at Newcastle United this afternoon.

Wayne Brown’s side found themselves 2-0 down after ten minutes at Whitley Park, in their final Group D match.

And the Magpies wrapped up their win with another goal, four minutes after the break.

Mo Sangare went close for Newcastle in the opening stages before the hosts took a seventh-minute lead through Luke Charman.

And Charman was on target again three minutes later when he headed home from close range following a cross into the box.

Decarrey Sheriff twice went close for Colchester after that, as they looked for a route back into the game.

But the U’s suffered a blow just before half-time when Sheriff was stretchered off after colliding with Curtis Good and had to be replaced by JJ Wilson.

Ryan Gondoh’s effort flashed just wide in first-half stoppage-time but Colchester fell further behind early in the second half when Sangare netted, following Charman’s pass.

Colchester kept going and Tariq Issa went close to reducing the deficit, while Wright and Callum Jones were both denied by Finnish keeper Otto Huuhtanen.

However, the U’s were unable to grab a consolation and made the long journey back home to Essex empty-handed.

COLCHESTER UNITED: Kurasik, Gondoh, Kensdale, Rooney, W. Wright, Allarakhia, Diaz Wright, Chilvers, Sheriff, Issa, Phipps. Substitutes: Collins, Jones, Krasniqi, Wilson.
