COLCHESTER Indoor Bowls Club beat visitors Clacton in a friendly over six rinks.

They won on three rinks, lost on two and drew on one rink and the overall shot count favoured the hosts, 119-96.

On rink one, Colchester skip Tom Smith and his team Margaret White, Beryl Nicholls and Ken White had be content with a 24-24 tie.

In fact the home team had to work hard over the last three ends to earn the tie, as they trailed 24-17 after 18 ends.

Rink two witnessed one of the losses suffered by Colchester.

Skip Dave Nichols, playing with Charlie Massa, Lyn Dubro and Ian Sach, managed to win more ends the their opponents but only once managed more than two shots on an end.

The home side still managed to hold a 13-12 lead after 17 ends but the final four ends saw them concede eight, while only scoring two.

The final tally was a 20-15 loss.

On rink three, Colchester club captain and skip David Jones also saw his team Avis Warren, Malcolm Wilkinson and Derek Hunt suffer a close 18-15 defeat.

After 15 ends they held what looked like a comfortable if not commanding 14-7 lead.

But over the final six ends they only managed one more shot while conceding 11 to Clacton.

Rink four saw a comfortable win for skip Martin French and team, Jackie Jones, Trevor Carpenter and Nick Kokolski.

They won 14 of the 21 ends and held the lead from the fifth end to the finish, winning 27-11.

On rink five, Colchester skip Sandy Finbow, playing with Kathleen French, Robin Piggott and Eric Dubro, also won 14 of the 21 ends.

They won 18-9, never once scoring more than two shots on any end.

Their opponents did manage a three on one end but only once.

Rink six skip Joe Coppin, playing with Ruby Wilkinson, Val Finbow and Joan Evans, were never behind on the scoreboard when winning 20-14.

The scores remained close throughout the match and the hosts had to gallop hard over the final three ends (7-3 on shots) to ensure victory.
