STANWAY ROVERS continued their winning ways with an important Thurlow Nunn League victory.
Angelo Harrop’s men beat Thetford Town 1-0, in a top-of-the-table contest at The Hawthorns.
In the process they moved above their opponents and up into second place in the premier division.
The only goal came early on, after a corner from Tyler Kemp.
The ball fell kindly for Craig Hughes, who drilled home to put the hosts in the ascendancy.
Kemp then fired over from a good position and Hughes nearly scored again in the latter stages – only to be denied by the bar.
Elsewhere, WIVENHOE TOWN were on their travels and made the long trip to Fakenham Town.
Unfortunately, though, they returned empty-handed after losing 2-1.
Mo Osman’s men took the lead in the first half, thanks to Jake Plane.
The midfielder netted after good work from Matthew Eve and Marcus Spindler.
Fakenham nearly levelled before the break – only to see a header come back off the post.
However, it was all-square in the second half after the hosts equalised from a corner.
They then grabbed a late winner at the far post to inflict a first away defeat of the season for Wivenhoe.
FC CLACTON were unable to cause an upset at home to leaders Mildenhall Town.
It was always going to be a tall order, considering the bottom-of-the-table Seasiders had lost all 12 of their matches prior to Saturday.
After falling behind, there were hopes they could achieve something special when Sean Hillier headed in a beautiful left-wing delivery from Kevin Coyle.
However, Mildenhall scored almost straight away and by half-time they had moved the score along to 4-1.
Three more goals in the second period made the final score 7-1.
BRANTHAM ATHLETIC, who had won 4-1 at Clacton in midweek, lost 3-1 at home to Gorleston.
Ollie Mann fired them in from the penalty spot, after a handball in the area.
However, Gorleston levelled with a penalty of their own four minutes later and then added a couple more, in the process moving up to third in the table.
In division one, HALSTEAD TOWN defeated fellow Essex side HOLLAND FC 2-1.
The Humbugs took an early lead when Tom Cook slotted home, after Michael Runicles challenged the Holland keeper.
Runicles then added a second, before Holland’s Terry Rymer ensured a tense finale by scoring from the penalty spot.
COGGESHALL TOWN kept up the heat on leaders Stowmarket with a 5-0 victory at Dereham Town Reserves, while BRAINTREE TOWN RESERVES won by the same score at home to March Town United.
