COLCHESTER greyhound trainer Dave Smith knew that it would take a massive upset of the form books for his dog Wise Susie to win the William Hill TV Trophy, but she so nearly overturned the odds in one of the sport's biggest and most prestigious races.
Wise Susie came within a single length of racing glory at the Great Yarmouth stadium last night as she finished the William Hill TV Trophy in second place.
She led for much of the race and pushed runaway favourite Spiridon Louis all the way to the post.
Wise Susie, drawn in her favoured number one trap, came out best of the six dogs but Spiridon Louis ominously dropped in behind her and, after the first circuit, he took up the lead.
The Colchester-trained dog came back with a good push at the seventh bend but Spiridon Louis dug deep and held on well to win the £6,000 purse by just one length.
