Colchester United manager Tony Humes has revealed that left-back Matthew Briggs is on his summer wanted list.

The U’s boss is busy shaping his squad for next season and has released a number of players, over recent days.

Briggs, who made 18 appearances for Colchester during a three-and-a-half month loan spell this season, is available on a free transfer following his recent release from Millwall.

And Humes said that the former Fulham youngster, who played his part in helping Colchester stay in League One, is one of the players on his radar.

Humes said: “Matthew started 17 games while he was on loan to us and he did well.

“The longer he was with us, the better he got.

“He’s definitely one that we’re looking at and considering, as with others.

“We know that Matthew is a talented boy.

“He’s 24 but he’s not played a lot of football in his career and has a lot of developing and learning to do.

“But he definitely fits into the bracket we’re looking at.”

Colchester have also been linked with a move for another former loanee Elliott Hewitt, after he was released by Ipswich Town.

Hewitt made 24 league and cup appearances for the U’s, after initially joining them on loan from Town last October.
