THE last group out finished first in Playgolf Colchester’s Texas Scramble.

Paul Addison, Harry Yearling and Mathew Gladman recorded a winning nett score of 61.9 to claim victory.

They made the most of the later conditions, when the main greens were clear of the light covering of snow that had greeted the early groups.

The scramble format saw teams of three play off a tenth of combined handicaps and pairs play off a fifth of combined handicaps.

Addison, Yearling and Gladman deserved their win but the performance of the day arguably came from runners-up Lee Kidger and Sam Durrant (5.0).

They showed great course management to record a nett score of 63, when the greens on the front nine covered by snow.

And the absence of a third team member due to a late-pull out made their second-place finish even better.

The third-placed team was made up of club captains from the last three years.

Bruce Critchley, Phil Reeve and Alister Bailey (3.8) were narrowly pushed into third by .2, after shooting a nett 63.2.

Results, division one: 1 Paul Addison, Harry Yearling and Mathew Gladman: 66-4.1 = 61.9; 2 Lee Kidger and Sam Durrant 68-5 = 63; 3 Bruce Critchley, Phil Reeve and Alister Bailey 67-3.8 = 63.2.

A large field competed in the seniors’ New Year Cup, in wintry conditions.

Steve Loran (11) carded the lowest gross and winning score in division one, in the medal format competition.

Loran carded a gross 82 for nett 71, with his card including a solid nine pars.

Will Elder (14) finished as runner-up on countback ahead of Dave Needham (20), after both players carded nett 73.

Colin Green (26) won division two with a nett 77 beating Tony Millington (25) with his extra shot to handicap, after both carded 103.

Geoff Tredgett took third spot with a nett 80.

Results, division one: 1 Steve Loran 82-11 = 71: 2 Will Elder 87-14 73ocb; 3 Dave Needham 93-20 = 73 ocb. Division two: 1 Colin Green 103-26 = 77; 2 Tony Millington 103-25 = 78; 3 Geoff Tredgett 107-27 = 80.
