A TRIO of Colchester Amateur Boxing Club members experienced mixed fortunes at the newly-formed Eastbourne Boxing Club’s inaugural dinner show.

Middleweight Cameron Renson was the first Colchester boxer to step between the ropes when he took on Exeter University ABC’s Rob Hobbs.

Awkward southpaw Hobbs came forward with combinations to head and body, in an exciting contest.

Renson stood back and landed counters, enjoying flashes of sustained pressure in a close opening round.

Neither boxer was able to take a commanding lead in the bout early on, although Hobbs landed the more eye-catching shots in round two.

However, Renson responded with some classy boxing and well-timed moments of pressure, in the third and final round.

And that was enough to help the Colchester ABC boxer secure a close but deserved split points decision.

Next up for Colchester ABC was Zoe Charge, who took on Eastbourne BC’s Meg Dhanji in an all-action contest.

Both boxers battled hard with furious exchanges, right up to the closing bell.

Taller boxer Dhanji threw long shots trying to catch Charge at range but the Colchester boxer quickly cut down the reach advantage.

She scored effectively with short punches to head and body and after a close first round, Charge stepped up the pace.

She put in a convincing performance in round two and despite being tired, both boxers pushed themselves to the limit in the third round.

Dhanji was awarded the decision on a very close points majority, in a bout that was subsequently voted contest of the night.

Frazer Wood faced Bexhill ABC’s hard-hitting boxer Ashley Mountain, in what proved to be a short-lived and difficult bout for the Colchester heavyweight.

After a few sharp exchanges in the opening seconds of the bout, Mountain landed a crashing right hand which sent Wood to the canvas.

And despite Wood’s determination to continue the bout was halted, in the interests of safety.
