HALSTEAD TOWN plan to turn up the volume - and hope their noisy supporters spur them on to a precious victory.

The Humbugs are preparing for a top-of-the-table Thurlow Nunn League division show showdown at Whitton United.

Town are second, four points behind today’s hosts but with two games in hand.

And in order to give their players an added lift, the club have bought some airhorns to pass on to travelling fans.

Boss Mark Benterman hopes the gesture gives his players an extra boost - and that both his squad and supporters have plenty to celebrate by the final whistle.

“We thought it would be a bit of fun,” he said.

“Our supporters have been excellent this season.

“They’re coming along in droves and are very excited and pleased with what they’re seeing.

“We believe around 40 are making the trip to Whitton.

“Giving them airhorns is just a little touch to really help them get behind our boys.

“Today’s game is a big occasion for us.

“We’ve come a long way in a short space of time and no-one expected this.

“We’re all excited and having lots of noise and support from our fans will really help and make a difference.”

Benterman, who has a fully fit squad, continues to be delighted by his side’s stunning form.

Town have won ten of their 11 league matches so far, culminating with last week’s 1-0 victory against Team Bury.

“We’ll go there with every confidence,” he said.

“We’re under no illusions about how hard it will be but our mentality this season is just not to lose.

“If we can go there and get a point then great. Anything more will be a bonus.

“We’re getting better and better every week and our first-half performance last week was the best since I’ve been at the club.”

Elsewhere today, WIVENHOE TOWN have their work cut when they make the trip to high-fliers Haverhill Rovers.

The Suffolk side are third in the premier division, having won eight and lost just two of their opening 13 games.

STANWAY ROVERS entertain basement boys Woodbridge, while BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT head to Walsham-le-Willows.

FC CLACTON could hand a debut to new Heybridge Swifts loanee Tom Holdstock in their home match against Gorleston.

The Seasiders were hoping to get the registration forms completed in time.
