Ron Gilzean’s superior back nine score helped him win Playgolf Colchester’s October division one stableford.

Gilzean (12) battled high winds to score 36 points and come out on top of a three-way countback tie.

Gilzean’s better back nine score included a birdie-par-birdie finish, which helped him to finish just in front of Richard Swindells (9) in second place.

Swindells shot a back nine of 19 points, paring the last seven holes from the 12th in but dropped shots on the tenth and the blob on the 11th cost him.

Lee Wicks scored well off his five handicap but was third after the countback scores were tallied.

Matthew Barnett scored well to beat handicap and win division two with 37 points, after winning a three-way countback tie.

In second place was Aaron Leeder after a good back nine, with Neil Freeman third.

Bernard Keyes won division three with 34 points, narrowly beating runner-up Nathan Soton on countback with Howard Banham third with 32 points.

Results, division one: 1st Ron Gilzean 36pts (ocb), 2nd Richard Swindells 36pts (ocb), 3rd Lee Wicks 35pts (ocb).

Division two: 1st Matthew Barnett 37pts (ocb), 2nd Aaron Leeder 37pts (ocb), 3rd Neil Freeman 37pts (ocb).

Division three: 1st Bernard Keyes 34pts (ocb), 2nd Nathan Soton 34pts (ocb), 3rd Howard Banham 31pts.

Terry Skornia won Playgolf Colchester’s Seniors Masters with his final round of nett 70, after his total score of 206 gave him a two-shot advantage.

Trevor Cocksedge was two strokes behind in second place with a final round of nett 68, giving him a total of 208 shots.

Doug Woodberry was three shots back in third with a nett 69 for a total of 211, while Steve Turner just missed out on the top ten on 212 shots.

Skornia was presented with his trophy at the club’s Senior Masters evening dinner, which marked the end of a successful summer season for the seniors.

The also-ran competition, held for those who missed the cut, was also a closely contested affair.

Countback was required to separate four players who all finished on 35 points, in the stableford competition.

The eventual winner was Dave Palmer, with Alan Barrett in second edging Greg King into third place and with Alan Bushe just missing out.

Ann Longman won the division one ladies stableford top spot with 34 points, in tricky conditions.

Nicky Withycombe was second on countback, ahead of third-placed Gina Macmillan and Paula Smith.

Pauline Jordan also scored 34 points to win division two from second-placed Linda Dundon and Linda Smith in third.

Tyler Garrett topped the list in the recent junior roll up, closely followed by Jonathan Tait.
