STOKE by Nayland Golf Club’s juniors are through to the national finals of the Youth Shield.

The club’s youngsters had finished as runners-up in the county finals of the competition, after suffering a narrow loss to Braintree GC.

But they were still able to progress to the regional competitions, as two teams from the final qualified due to the volume of clubs in Essex.

As a result, Stoke by Nayland travelled to Yorkshire to take on Cookridge Hall GC.

The whole team played fantastically well to win the round, in some very tough conditions.

Stoke by Nayland then travelled to Shropshire to play Hill Valley GC, playing some great golf despite torrential rain.

It became clear towards the end of the matches that it was going to be very close. But helped by some great scores from the players, particularly Charlie Sargeant’s one over gross, they claimed victory.

When the results were announced, Stoke by Nayland had won and were on their way to the National Finals at Essendon GC in Hertfordshire, on November 10.

They will play against four other teams, with the top two progressing through to the home nations finals in Spain, next March.
