Colchester United drew 0-0 with Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season friendly in front of a crowd of nearly 10,000 tonight, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The U's gave an excellent account of themselves against their Premier League opponents, who fielded the likes of Jermain Defoe, Scott Parker and Michael Dawson.

Sanchez Watt hit the post inside the opening two minutes while at the other end U's keeper Sam Walker, who re-signed for the U's earlier in the day on loan from Chelsea, denied Iago Falque before half-time.

Colchester started the second half brightly too and Freddie Sears was denied by Spurs substitute keeper Hugo Lloris.

But Walker saved from Harry Kane who also struck a post for Tottenham and Defoe went close for the visitors late on, as an entertaining friendly ended goal-less.

U's manager Joe Dunne said: "The lads worked extremely hard and I thought we started both halves very well.

"Overall, I'm delighted with how we did and our fitness levels.

"We started the game well and we counter-attacked with speed but the difference is the recovery levels of the opposition.

"There was a period when they got on top and Sam Walker made some very good saves for us.

"Off the ball we worked very hard though and our shape was good.

"We've managed to get lots of players valuable minutes on the pitch this week."
