Colchester United are considering the possibility of extending Michael Smith’s loan until the end of the season.

The U’s expects to have Freddie Sears back again for their game against AFC Bournemouth, on Good Friday.

And with Jabo Ibehre also ready to return after suspension, Colchester now have plenty of options in attack.

However, Smith has made a big impact since joining Colchester on loan from Championship side Charlton Athletic, earlier this month.

The 21-year-old, whose loan is due to end next month, has started twice for the U’s, scoring once.

And U’s boss Joe Dunne said he has been pleased with the youngster’s contribution.

Dunne said: “We will take a look at extending Michael Smith’s loan.

“Michael was brought in as cover for Freddie and Jabo but he hasn’t half served his purpose and has done well.

“What he’s done is take his opportunity.

“We will see what happens – everyone we seem to bring in wants to stay!

“That’s testament to the group, testament to the club and testament to what we’re trying to do.

“We’ve extended the loan spells of Billy Clifford and Bradley Garmston and that’s what we’re creating.”
