Lockdown may have put a dampener on most of the nation’s plans, however, 17-year-old Ellie Crow from Rayne spent this time building and curating her own successful business. As a student, she would’ve been studying for her GCSEs, nevertheless, with the unprecedented circumstances, they were cancelled- giving her an ample opportunity to develop her talents as an entrepreneur and pursue her passion for baking.

Ellie first started in 2020, making truffles for friends and family at her home in Rayne. She says, “I started because I was bored during lockdown and wanted to earn money to pay off my car,” – her usual job, like so many others, had to close due to COVID-19. She hadn’t intended from the get-go on starting a baking business; however, when friends and family started suggesting she should create an Instagram account, @ellsbakessss was established! Her passion for baking was inspired by her Mum, Nan and Cousin (who helped her when she first started)- she also used to bake lots with her primary school teacher.

Since then, her account has grown vastly: cupcakes, millionaire’s shortbread, brownies, event cakes, giant cookies and more are all now produced! She also posts very popular raffles and giveaways, as well as special occasion/festive bakes which help to continue to grow her business substantially. She says, “My most popular item is big cakes for birthdays and special moments, as these cannot be cancelled! …. Everyone wanted to make their loved one’s birthday better with a special cake.”. In spite of lockdown, people are finding Ellie’s bakes a special way to still bring celebration to their momentous days.

On top of this, Ellie also continues her studies at Sixth Form as well as maintaining @ellsbakessss. When asked about how she manages all of this, she answered, “Balancing between work and education has become easier since doing Sixth Form online at home. I only take a few orders a week now (I used to do 1 a day and it was too much)”. Regardless, still an impressive feat for a young baker who is also studying!

Although @ellsbakessss has grown significantly since its launch (Ellie has almost paid off her car!), it is still ever-growing and becoming more and more popular. When asked about her ambitions for the future, Ellie stated “My hope for the future is that I keep growing and keep up a good customer base so I can bake alongside university and becoming a PE teacher”.

Congratulations on the success of your business Ellie; it’s exceptional to see so much entrepreneurial skill, talent and success in a local young person!
