A DEDICATED youngster has managed to take more than 450,000 steps in memory of his auntie.

Cooper Parsons, nine, of Burnham, donned a FitBit step counter on his wrist and set himself the challenge of walking 15,000 steps a day for the whole month of October.

The St Mary’s Primary School pupil aimed to raise money for Breast Cancer Care, a charity he supports since his aunt sadly died a few years ago.

Gemma Mason died of breast cancer in 2014 at the age of just 34.

Cooper’s parents Scott and Joanne supported his decision, setting up a JustGiving page and documenting his progress.

Dad Scott was impressed with his determination and the kind support of the community.

Mr Parsons said: “He’s very keen on fitness, he does a lot of sports at school.

“It was such a nice thing to do because he was really close to his aunt.

“He wanted to do something which raised his fitness goals and one way was the step challenge.

“It’s a lot of determination for a nine-year-old.

“At 38, I definitely think I would not be able to do something like that.

“He’s had a lot of support from people donating and it has been amazing.”

By the end of the challenge, Cooper raised £585 for his charity and completed 476,807 steps, which is about the distance from Burnham to Amsterdam.

Mr Parsons added: “He would be walking around the house for 30 to 45 minutes to get his steps up.

“The school has been very supportive and allowed him to wear his Fitbit into school.

“He plays golf so at the weekends he got his steps up by walking around the golf course. His other auntie has a dog so he would walk the little dachshund.

“He was just pushing himself to reach his target every day. We are so proud of him.”

Cooper wants to continue raising money for Breast Cancer Care.
