A CONCERNED councillor has appealed for anyone with land to let children use it in a bid to get youngsters doing wheelies off the streets.

Harwich Town councillor Dave McLeod is worried a child will be killed if action is not taken to stop children performing the dangerous stunts on busy roads.

Now he has asked if anyone has some spare ground where the children can enjoy doing the cycling manoeuvres safely.

He said: “We are appealing for anyone having a ground who would like to offer it for young people. We are asking people to help out with the situation.”

Mr McLeod said the move is central to the ambition to “get youngsters off the road”.

“Somebody is going to get killed and it’s only a matter of time”, he added.

“It’s really worrying some children are cycling around wearing dark clothes with no lights on.

“If they get in front of a car it’s really concerning for everybody, not just themselves and their families but also the drivers.

“We are just trying to warn people of what could happen at any time. Prevention is better than cure.”

He also added he was looking for an alternative to Dovercourt skate park which tends to be busy with scooters and hoverboards, saying children need a space free of obstacles and a larger, enclosed environment.

Chris Scutt, who runs Dovercourt Skating Rink, said he could provide one solution.

He said he decided to offer up the skating rink as a safe and controlled environment for children.

He has now called for a meeting where parents and their children can openly discuss the opportunity to use the rink for stunts.

He said: “We’d like to see many parents come along with their children, as well as people with innovative ideas.

“We will do whatever we can but we would need to know what children would like to see happening.

“We will have to look at the logistics part of it but we could surely do something about it.

“I’d be quite happy to see if we can neutralise the problem.

“We don’t want to see any accidents and we would like to prevent any accidents.”

The meeting will be held at the skating rink, in Lower Marine Parade, Dovercourt, tomorrow, starting at 9.30am.
