POLICE are appealing for people with information to come forward after a safe was fished out of a river.

Officers with Essex Police made the appeal after the safe was found near Sturmer.

The badly corroded safe was reported to police on Sunday afternoon after being discovered on the side of the River Stour by a member of the public.

It is believed to have been pulled out over the weekend along with other metal objects by people ‘fishing’ for metal in the river using magnets.

Officers are currently unsure of the make and model of the safe.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “At this time, enquiries are on going to try and establish if the safe has been stolen and to locate an owner.

“It is unknown how long the safe has been in the river

“Some items were recovered but they were very water-damaged and haven’t helped locate an owner or didn’t relate to any recently reported crimes

“Braintree CID do not have any current investigations that involve a similar safe.”

Police say they have had a number of people come forward with further information.

Anyone with information is urged to contact braintreeanduttlesfordcpt@essex.pnn.police.uk.
