ANOTHER coronavirus-related death has been recorded in the Braintree district.

The Office for National Statistics' weekly update shows the number of deaths in the region linked to Covid-19 now stands at 117.

The death, which happened in a hospital, was recorded in the week ending Friday, July 10, and the data is correct as of that date.

It comes amid a spike of coronavirus cases in the district which came as a result of an outbreak in a care home.

The number of new cases recorded in the past week stands at 30 while the number of positive tests carried out in July is now 75.

The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the district since the pandemic began in March stands at 487.

Braintree's MP James Cleverly says he understands concerns about the rise in coronavrius cases in his constituency in recent weeks.

However, he insists the infection rate remains low compared to other parts of the UK and residents should not be concerned.

In a statement on Facebook, he said: "I am aware that there has been concerns raised following a report published online by the University of East Anglia that there has been a sharp increase in the number of daily coronavirus cases in Braintree.

"The rate is still comparatively low when compared to other areas of the UK, but I do understand people’s concerns.

"I have spoken to Dr Mike Gogarty, director of public health at Essex County Council, and I have been advised that there have been a very small number of discreet incidents in Braintree district, leading to wider testing.

"I understand that the majority of cases identified have been asymptomatic and they remain well. I will of course continue to liaise with Essex County Council regarding track and trace and monitor the situation.

"It is important to remember that case numbers and infection rate throughout the Braintree district have been low throughout the pandemic, and this is due to you all abiding by the social distancing rules and working together as a community.

"As lockdown restrictions continue to ease and our High Street and hospitality industry reopen , I am pleased to see the careful precautions and safety measures in place to allow us to safely restart our economy and enjoy our local amenities once more."
