COUNCIL bosses say a team of police officers are already having an impact on safety in Witham.

The town centre team scheme was launched by Essex Police last year to improve connections with communities.

On the year anniversary of the launch, Witham Town Council has hailed the impact the team has had in the past 12 months.

A spokesman said: “Since the closure of the police station several years ago, Witham’s public have wanted more local, visible policing to help combat issues such as anti-social behaviour, break-ins and drug dealing.

“The introduction of the team town last year has given people the opportunity to see extra police regularly on the streets which the town council welcomes.

“By visiting the local schools as well as taking part in community events, we feel that the town team are forging important relationships within the community which combined with the work of the special constables and our newly appointed police community support officer will benefit the town with its fight against crime.

“The council is fully supportive of this vital team of officers who have already made a visible impact to public safety.”
