Four police cars are at the scene, in Lexden Road, while two fire engines were also called.
No one was hurt in the incident.
It is thought the high-end 2014 car, a Porsche Targa 4s, was parked in a car park, in Crouch Street before it crashed though a wall and dropped onto the subway.
An on-looker said: "It looks as though the car's been parked and whoever's got in has just gone straight through the wall.
"I've never seen anything like it."
A spokeswoman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines were sent to the scene at about 6.20pm.
No one was injured or trapped and fire officers simply made the scene safe before leaving shortly after 6.30pm.
An Essex Police spokesman has appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage to call 101 and ask for PC Elizabeth Ferris at Stanway Roads Policing Unit.
