Christmas shoppers took a step back in time at a festive medieval fair.

Crafts, food and music were on offer at Grange Barn in Coggeshall for the annual event.

The Companye of Merrie Folke historic re-enactment group appeared at the event and showed traditional crafts and foods as well as playing festive music and putting on puppet shows.

Lizzie Dunford, manager of Grange Barn, said: “It is organised by the Companye of Merrie Folke, a talented group of re-enactors who can also be seen at Kentwell and Hampton Court Palace.

“The barn was built in 1240 and at Christmas it is repopulated with medieval folk, alongside modern day crafts people selling their wares.

“Visitors could hear some popular music, taste some medieval food and find out more about this fascinating era, as well as buying some gorgeous handmade Christmas presents.”

Coggeshall Grange Barn’s sister property, Paycocke’s House and Garden, will also be open for a Tudor Christmas on December 9 and 10.

Grange Barn is a 13th century monastic barn which is run by the National Trust and is one of Europe’s oldest timber framed buildings.

Inside the barn is an exhibition of woodcarving, tools and agricultural carts.
