TRAVELLERS have pitched on football fields for the second time in as many months.

Up to 17 caravans have been at home on the Gas Rec football pitch, Colchester, since Friday.

It means childrens’ training sessions have had to be cancelled. Club bosses say the travellers have been dumping waste in the trees surrounding the two pitches.

The football club and Oracle Dental Surgery, in Bromley Road, have contacted the police.

Mark Ennew, club chairman, said despite the calls, no officers have attended.

He said: “What I can’t understand is neither the police nor Colchester Council is doing anything about it.”

Mr Ennew also said club staff had been threatened by some of the travellers after they closed the exit gates in a bid to stop more travellers from entering overnight.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said a report of criminal damage has been received and officers are investigating.
