ALTHOUGH some credit must be given for the speed at which the hole in East Street was attended to, unfortunately dumping a lump of asphalt into it did not achieve the desired result because the underlying problem – a water leak – was not attended to, resulting in another hole full of water forming around the so called repair.

However every negative has a positive: if you are lucky enough to be seated at a table in the Siege House next to the windows facing East Street you will be treated to two different artistic genres.

The first is the Jackson Pollock tribute on the glass but unlike his infamous “drip technique” of splashing paint on a horizontal surface these works have been created by dirty water being splashed on to the windows by passing vehicles going through the puddles in the newly formed hole.

The second genre is dedicated to dancing which involves people doing hip-hop – waiting for a break in the traffic so that they can then leap across the wet area on the pavement to avoid getting drenched by vehicles splashing through the hole.

It could have been worse, however, as a pedestrian crossing could have put there which would then have had to be removed.
