THERE’S no stopping runner Bob Brown. West Mersea ’s Catherine Bullen Foundation will be the latest organisation to benefit from the 56-year-old’s long-distance runs.

Mr Brown, deputy logistics and security manager at Colchester General Hospital, is looking to complete 13 miles on a circular route from the Turner Road hospital tomorrow. He hopes to make at least £500 in sponsorship for the foundation, which is raising funds for a new dormitory project at a primary school in Eiseb, a rural community in Namibia’s Omaheke province.

The hospital itself has been the focus of a number of Mr Brown’s charity drives.

Specialists there diagnosed a condition affecting the two lower discs of his spine, but recommended using a pilates ball to help. He said: “Two or three years ago, I could hardly walk 100 metres. But the exercise I do and using a pilates ball has opened up the spine. I just wanted to run again; I love it. I really missed it during the three or four years I didn’t run."

As a thank-you, Mr Brown has raised money for health-related causes, including £1,100 for the hospital’s special care baby unit, and, with colleague Steve Ridges, more than £1,000 for Essex Air Ambulance .

Mr Brown also has his sights on next year’s London Marathon – his second– in which he has pledged to make at least £1,600 for the Royal National Insititute of Blind People.

But tomorrow's half-marathon will help the foundation. It was formed by Roger and Linda Bullen after their daughter Catherine’s death in Namibia ten years ago. Linda is sister-in-charge of orthopaedic pre-admission at the hospitall.

The couple have raised thousands for their African projects, many centred on Otjimanangombe village and its primary school.

Mr Bullen said: “We are extremely grateful to Bob for choosing the foundation.

“As well as the fundraising aspect, the distance covered will be added to our Sportathon challenge to cover the distance from London to Windhoek, the Namibian capital.”
