COLCHESTER Zoo’s newest arrivals are a pair smooth-coated otters, born to parents rescued from the Asian exotic animal trade.
The male cubs will be given Cambodian names, along the same lines as their parents, Kong Kea and Chea.
Zoo spokesman Mel Fitch said: “Having come from rescue situations in Cambodia it is really great news the adults are breeding successfully, proving they are happy in the zoo’s Otter Creek enclosure.”
Smooth-coated otters are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list, which means they are at risk of becoming a threatened species.
One of the major threats to their survival is the loss of suitable habitat.
