AFTER a week of sunshine, the rain has returned to dampen the summer holidays of youngsters in north Essex.

But never fear. Plenty of indoor entertainment has been on offer at a host of sports centres and venues until the blue skies return.

Youngsters aged six to 11 spent Friday with coaches from Colchester United to hone their ball skills and teamwork.

The event took place at St John’s and Highwoods Community Centre, in Highwoods Square, Colchester.

Tom Stuart, the centre’s assistant manager, said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly.”

Yesterday, families discovered the world of junk robot making.

Colchester’s Firstsite gallery has been playing host to the workshops this week, which have been led by associate artist Jacqueline Davies.

The intergalactic creations have been made from all kinds of materials.

Those attending have also had the chance to dress up in sci-fi themed costumes.

The workshops are for families with children up to the age of 11.

Lindsay Evans, Firstsite ’s press and marketing co-ordinator, said the sessions had been extremely popular.

She said: “With the cooler weather, people have found things to do inside.”
