LOADS of walkers took part in a late-night charity trek under the stars.

The fourth annual Starlight Walk left from Playgolf Colchester, in Lexden, on Saturday.

More than 150 people, including 31 men, took part in the event which aims to raise enough money to buy Essex County Hospital new digital mammogram equipment.

In previous years, the event has raised thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK. Among the walkers were two cancer patients, including one who flew over from Sweden to take part.

Organiser Nicky Withycombe said: “It was a lovely night, a bit windy but dry.

“There was an amazing buzz when you all get to the end.

“It is also nice to see the men’s figures going up. That was something we wanted to concentrate on.

“We are now counting up the sponsor money and hope the donations reflect the effort everyone put in.

“This year’s local cause has helped boost the level of support from people taking part.”

All but two walkers completed the trek, which was started by Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell. All the walkers were given a warm-up by trainer Dave Bond, of Potentia Performance.

The ten-mile circular route took in Stanway, Layer Road, Abbey Fields, Southway, up to North Station and Bergholt Road.

Playgolf offered its clubhouse and marquee for the event and Colchester trophies provided medals for free.

Food was provided by Edwards Potatoes, Bookers wholesale and Perrin butchers. McDonalds supplied 300 bottles of water and Cadbury’s provided boxes of chocolate.
