GANGS of thieves operating in Colchester nightspots have stolen more than £50,000 worth of mobile phones.
Police are carrying out covert and overt operations at bars and clubs in the town centre as they attempt to combat the problem.
A senior officer revealed 141 mobile phones have been reported stolen since January 1, the vast majority form venues connected with the night-time economy.
In the last month alone there have been 32 reported thefts - which does not include all those people who don’t inform the police.
The organised gangs are specifically targeting smart phones, worth up to £500 each, spying on people and waiting to strike.
