VILLAGERS are gearing up for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by renovating a red telephone box from the 1930s.

More than a year ago a similar red box was removed from Nayland by mistake but now a replacement for the space in Bear Street has been found, in neighbouring village Wiston.

The replacement three-quarter tonne K6 box was installed last weekend.

It is being restored by the Nayland with Wissington Conservation Society.

John Alexander, chairman of the society, said: “It is particularly fitting that the village will have the box back for the Queen’s Jubilee, even though it will not be re-commissioned.

“It requires a lot of renovation but that is in hand.”

He added: “We live in the age of the mobile phone and everyone understands that, but it adds so much to the village environment and to the street scene.”

The new box was built in 1936 and has spent more than 70 years in Wiston.

The society is now asking for suggestions for the future of the box.

So far ideas include an information kiosk for residents and visitors, made up of shelves with tourism leaflets, or a book exchange.

Villagers are invited to submit other suggestions to Jill Badman, Sargeants, Bear Street, Nayland, CO6 4HY or jill@badman-consulting.co.uk.
