COLCHESTER’S MP has thrown his support behind Colchester’s Community Awards.

Launched by the Gazette and the Rotary Club of Colchester Trinity, the search is on for volunteers and groups in the town who go the extra mile for their community.

With eight categories, recognizing everyone from children to community groups, Sir Bob Russell said now is the time to nominate. He said: “There are hundreds of people in Colchester who voluntarily give their time for the benefit of others, and all of them are unsung heroes and heroines.

“I congratulate the Gazette and Rotary Club of Colchester Trinity for wanting to give them recognition, and I encourage organisations and individuals to nominate those of our fellow citizens, without whom the community life in Colchester would be the poorer.”

Winners will be honoured in a special ceremony at the Headgate Theatre next month.

However, time for nominations is running out, with the deadline on May 25.

To nominate your unsung hero simply fill out the entry form explaining why you have nominated the person or group, and return it to the Gazette office.

Rotarian spokesman Richard Peile said: “We want to hear from everyone and anyone who selflessly gives up their time for others.”

Sponsor Collier and Catchpole as an independent Colchester-based builders’ merchant is rooted in the community.

Tim Rowbottom, joint managing director, said: “We are delighted to be associated, once again, with the Gazette and Trinity Rotary Club in sponsoring the awards.

“They recognise a few members of our community who give unpaid service to help others.

“Without such selfless people, the town would be a much sadder place in which to live.”
