BULLDOZERS are ready to raze Colchester United’s former Layer Road ground.

The demolition work has been welcomed by residents, who say the site had become an eyesore since the U’s left in 2008.

Developer Abbey New Homes is clearing the site to make way for 58 homes.

The scheme was given planning permission by Colchester Council’s planning committee in November, but work has only just started.

Ralph Martin, of Ralph and Rita florists next to the site, said: “We have been here more than 30 years and this is the last time I am going to see the ground as it is, even though it is in a bit of a state.

“I am pleased to see the work finally started. I know everybody in the area will be pleased to see it tidied up. But it is still sad. We have fantastic memories.”

Shrub End councillor Lyn Barton said: “I am delighted we can move forward. It should be a nice development.”

Fellow councillor Nigel Offen said: “There will no longer be the temptation for metal thieves and vandals to enjoy themselves on the site.”

Clearance work is expected to take about six weeks.

The first job is to remove asbestos.

The new estate will include a memorial garden dedicated to supporters who had their ashes spread at the ground.

Club spokesman Matt Hudson, said: “The developer is making sure the pitch is protected during the demolition process as a lot of supporters had their ashes put there, so the developer is treating it sensitively.

“It is a little sad, but it is the next step.”

The developer will pay almost £500,000 to improve cycle routes and amenities in the area, including £67,828 for the refurbishment of Shrub End Community Hall.

Essex County Council has rejected an application for a zebra crossing at the entrance to the site.

l Colchester United played at Layer Road from 1937 to 2008, when they moved to the out-of-town Weston Homes Community Stadium.
