FIREFIGHTERS across Essex could go on strike over cuts to frontline services.

The Essex Fire Brigades Union has given formal notice of its intention to ballot for a strike to Essex Fire and Rescue Service, according to union representatives.

Members have expressed concerns over frontline cuts and changes which they claim have been forced through by the service without proper consultation or negotiation.

Any strike would not go ahead until June 20 at the earliest and union officials stated they are still willing to meet fire service representatives.

They claim major frontline cuts across Essex including the removal of wholetime specialist rescue crews from Colchester, Harlow, Basildon, Grays and Southend left them with no choice.

At the same time millions of pounds have been wasted on fire headquarters, according to the union.

Mick Rogers FBU brigade secretary said: “Essex fire crews have suggested a way forward to resolve the issues in dispute. But cuts and imposition of changes have left us with no alternative but to start balloting for strike action.

“The legal timetable for ballots is such that there is more than enough time to resolve the issues between us.”

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Adam Eckley said: “We are disappointed but somewhat confused by the FBU’s latest statement regarding a ballot for strike action.

“We have received no official notification from the union and until we do so, it will be difficult for us to comment.”
