I totally agree with Colchester Council’s tough new regime against litter louts (Gazette, March 21).
If people throw litter, a fine is justified, but what is the difference between dropping litter and throwing litter?
Knowing the mentality of parking wardens and wheel clampers, are we in fear of a £50 fine when reaching for a hankerchief from a pocket or a handbag and a grocery bill falls on the floor?
If only the enthusiasm directed towards litter was focused at the more important problems we face in our society.

...Can I invite other readers to play, with me, a game of Pointless. Today’s question is based on Colchester Council – cleaning the filthy streets of Colchester and on how many times we have been promised this in the past.
Readers are asked to give the years in which it was promised up to and including March 2012 and, of course, who said it ?
Answers please to councillor Martin Hunt and his team at the Pointless Seminar, the Moot Hall, Colchester.
