CLOCKS moved from Colchester’s Tymperleys museum are set to be unveiled at Hollytrees Museum.

The gallery, dedicated to businessman Bernard Mason, who gave the collection to the people of Colchester, will open to the public in Tuesday.

The collection of Colchester-made clocks and watches, previously on display at Tymperleys, which was closed to save £30,000 a year.

Lyn Barton, councillor responsible for renaissance, said: “We wanted the gallery named after Bernard Mason in recognition of the amazing contribution he made to Colchester and as a tribute to his generosity.

“Hollytrees is a very popular museum, which attracts a wide range of audiences.

“This will mean far more people will be able to experience this incredible collection and therefore this will increase access to Colchester’s fascinating horological past.”

Campaigners have criticised Colchester Council’s decision to close Tymperleys, saying it was left to the town and it is only selling it to make money.

It is on the market for £250,000 for a 125-year lease and could become a bed and breakfast, wedding venue or a cafe.

Bill Hayton, chairman of Destination Colchester, claimed the council might make some short-term gain, but the town would make a long-term loss.

Hollytrees attracts 37,000 visitors a year, compared to 7,000 at Tymperleys.

Colchester MP Bob Russell will open the display on Monday. It will be open to the public from Tuesday.

Hollytrees is free to visit. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am until 5pm, and from 11am until 5pm on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays.
