I am writing to clarify the current situation regarding the proposed closure of the St Osyth recycling centre for household waste, after the article in the Gazette (September 29) about my recent meeting with representatives from local parish councils.

The meeting took place as part of the consultation process into the proposed changes to the recycling centre service across the county.

We are consulting openly about our plans and I will consider all representations received before taking a final decision later this month.

It was a very productive meeting and, as a result, we are – together with some parish representatives – looking at possible alternatives.

For the benefit of accuracy, this has not led to us reconsidering our proposal.

I must stress this review is not just about saving money, it is about reducing inefficiencies and providing a first-class recycling service for our residents across the county.

Improvements in kerbside recycling collections have led to a fall in usage of recycling centres, so it necessary for us to address this and reduce any overlap.

The St Osyth recycling centre has been earmarked for closure as it is a small site with low usage. The larger nearby Rush Green recycling centre has the capacity to accept additional visitors.

I must also stress that we are proposing to make changes to the service across the county, with one other centre selected for closure, and nine others seeing a reduction in their opening days.

Our aim is to improve site efficiency and value for money for the taxpayer, while ensuring residents still have access to a local site.
