It was an uplifting experience being at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool last week with fellow Colchester councillors Dave Harris and Julie Young.

There is no doubt we have established ourselves as the only main political party with the interests of the hard-working majority at heart and the only party committed to retaining the NHS as a “national” service and opposing the savage cuts to our police force, which will result in more crime and less safety.

It was also refreshing and heartening to hear Jim Murphy, the shadow defence secretary, announce serving and former members of the Armed Forces could now join the Labour Party for £1 and that a Labour Friends of the Forces Group was being set up.

Julie, Dave and I met Jim shortly after his speech to invite him to Colchester, which he enthusiastically accepted, and we are now in the process of setting up this visit.

We would encourage all former and serving members of the Armed Forces in Colchester to join Labour to oppose this Government’s cuts and fight for a fairer society.
