ROAD chaos ensued as an accident and a lorry breakdown happened within 100 yards of each other at a busy junction.

A car crashed into the side of van, blocking a lane on Butt Road on Wednesday.

At the same time a lorry suffered engine failure and broke down in the central, West bound lane of Southway.

Both incidents occurred around 10.45am.

A green Chrysler Neon drove into the side of Kent Blaxhill Glazing van as it switched lanes on Butt Road.

Police and accident removal crews towed the car to the side of the one way route to free up a lane for passing traffic.

Resident Karen Ward and friend Sarah-Jane Treadaway witnessed the accident.

Mrs Ward said: “The sound was unreal, a massive bang.

“It caused a lot of chaos.

“At one point the car was stuck in the side of the van right in the middle of the road.”

Two police officers helped the driver of the van, which wasn’t loaded with glass at the time, to sweep the scene.

Both drivers were uninjured.

Police also coned off all three lanes on Southway after a Country Turf Scania lorry broke down.

A rescue and recovery team was called to tow the vehicle away.
