SKATEBOARDERS have adopted the arts centre as their new home.

More than 40 youths have been practising their hobby outside the building.

A resident called for the skateboarders to be banned, but Firstsite has not revealed if it will try to stop the activity.

Director Kath Wood said: “We are delighted how many people have adopted the open space.

“But there are some logistical issues which we need to look at.

“We will work with the council to make sure only suitable activities take place there.

“But it is not uncommon to see skateboarders congregating along London’s South Bank. Different people will want to utilise the space in different ways.” Patlin Coplin, from Colchester’s Dutch Quarter, said: “It is inappropriate that a public space well-used by people of all ages should be dominated by skateboarders.

“They have apparently already damaged some steps in the area and it will not be long before someone is hurt.

“I spoke to a security guard who said there was nothing they could do, because the land is owned by Colchester Council.”

“I am a member of the British Museum, which also has open spaces around it.

“But it has not been turned into a skatepark, so why should our new arts centre be?”

Colchester Council was unavailable for comment.
