A CAMPAIGN has been launched for a vandal-proof play area on an unused patch of land on Colchester’s Greenstead estate.

Voices for Greenstead residents’ association hopes to build the play area for children living in and around Balfe Court.

Nicola Davey, secretary of Voices for Greenstead, says there is nothing for youngsters to do on the estate.

She said: “This could be a lovely facility for youngsters. At the moment many of them are just hanging around or playing catch, but don’t have much else to do.

“There was a play area there years ago, but it was pulled down. Then we had basket ball hoops, which were eventually vandalised.

“We want to get it right this time and build vandal-proof, gym-style equipment.

“It is still early days and it may take some time to get funding, especially at the moment with everyone’s budget being cut, but it is a great cause so, hopefully, we will get there.”

Alistair Heron, community development officer at housing association Colne Housing, which owns the land, said: “We’re really keen to work closely with Voices for Greenstead.

“As well as looking at possible funding sources, we will also be working together to make sure our plans reflect the wishes of local people.”

Voices for Greenstead will hold its next meeting at Forest Road Meeting Hall on Tuesday, October 11, from 7pm to 8.30pm.
