A CHARITY has made the record books by reclaiming the title for the world’s largest piggy back race.

History Maker Foundation organised the event with 322 piggy-backing pairs competing in Lower Castle Park on Sunday.

It previously held the title in October last year, but was beaten just four weeks later.

The charity, which gives young disabled and disadvantaged people the opportunity to take part in outdoor activities, will be listed in the Guinness World Records once the achievement is confirmed by officials.

Penny Pancaldi, director, said: “We are pleased with the record and with how the day went.

“There were lots of people racing in 28 degree heat. It was a bit of fun and helped raise awareness of our cause.”

About 330 people started the race, but four pairs were disqualified along the way for falling.

Among the competitors was St Anne’s councillor, Mike Hogg.

Colchester Mayor Helen Chuah sounded the starting pistol and also handed out awards to the race winners.

The record attempt required pairs to race along a 100 metre course, with the fastest coming in at 14 seconds.

It was held in memory of Mrs Pancaldi’s son, Joe, who died in a mountaineering accident in Scotland in 2008.

A family picture of the 21-year-old giving sister, Charity, a piggy back sparked the idea for the record attempt.
