A HOMELESS man who stole alcohol and crisps has been spared jail.

James Forset, 31, of no fixed address, admitted stealing goods worth £31.67 on Thursday, September 22 from Marks and Spencer in Colchester when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.

He also admitted stealing food and alcohol worth £7.24 from store on Wednesday while on bail.

The court heard how Forset had fallen on bad times after he lost his driving licence in 2009 and went on to lose his job, partner and home.

District Judge David Cooper sentenced him to 16 weeks in prison for each offence, to be served at the same time, which he suspended for one year.

Forset was not ordered to pay any compensation or costs because he had no means to pay.
