A COLCHESTER St John Ambulance volunteer who devotes her life to helping others will be among the finalists at next month’s Pride of Britain awards.

Alice Randell, 23, will represent the East of England at the final in London on October 3, when Prince Charles and David Cameron will join some of the biggest names in showbiz in honouring the UK’s unsung heroes.

Alice, of Greenfield Houses, Birch, is the leader of Colchester St John Ambulance’s Badgers – the charity’s youth group, which has members aged five to ten.

She is also a community responder, answering emergency calls in her area and providing first aid while waiting for NHS paramedics to arrive.

She also serves as a special constable for Colchester police on top of her day job, which involvesbooking hospital transport in response to calls from doctors’ surgeries, nurses and patients.

She was nominated for the award by her fiance, Andrew Kettle, who said: “What she does for her local community is absolutely fantastic. She always puts others before herself.”

Last year, Alice won the Chief Ambulance Officer’s award after providing first aid in the aftermath of the Harwich powerboat festival accident, in which one man lost his life and two others were seriously injured. Alice joined St John Ambulance in 2008 after overcoming serious health problems, because she was so grateful for the medical care she received as a teenager.

She said: “I wanted to do something to help others. Teaching the Badgers and seeing them have fun while learning first aid is very rewarding.

“I’d like to see more people volunteering with St John Ambulance.”
