There was once a Socialist politician who, being elected to the office of Prime Minister, vowed he would get politicians “joined up”, ie: talk to each other.
Then, he insisted local government become like central government and have “portfolio holders”.
Alas, never mind politicians not getting joined up – portfolio holders seemingly don’t even talk to each other – it’s definitely not “joined up”.
Take the cycle path in Crouch Street, for instance.
Has this helped cyclists? I don’t think so.
Has it helped Crouch Street businesses – definitely not! Then, get out of your car and on to the bus.
Is it a good service – another definitely not!
Then there are the councillors who have been elected to two or more councils, like Colchester and Essex.
Who do they represent?
Under Hanningfield, the joint councillors were seemingly acting for Essex County Council, not Colchester Borough Council.
This must stop. Councillors elected by Colcestrians must act only for and on behalf of Colchester and not be remotely-controlled by Chelmsford.
County councillors are elected separately, aren’t they?
